For various reasons, he arrived a day earlier than agreed with the representative Hoeck. As it was the weekend and Wolfgang Haschke didn’t want to disturb the representative, he decided to use the day off to go sightseeing on his own. He was aware that the city is rich in history and has a multitude of sights. So he took a cab to the Salt Cathedral, the world-famous Gold Museum (Museo del Oro), the Plaza de Bolivar and other sights.
When Wolfgang Haschke told representative Hoeck about his solo effort the next day, Hoeck gave him a little “lecture” – explaining to him what could have happened in view of the rampant crime in Colombia. Well, Wolfgang Haschke was lucky, but he became much more cautious on further trips to Central and South America and made his own assessment of the security situation.
His conclusion was: It’s better to stay in a safe hotel than take a risk outside in the dark. It was also good for business: Keeping cozy inside the hotel meant he could do productive things like write up travel reports.
