Wire mesh LARGO-PLENUS

To achieve this goal the architect's team created a concept, that followed certain guidelines:

1. We will “store” 791 cars with 4 levels.

2. The exterior skin must be a minimum of 20% open by code.

3. Make the building unrecognizable as a parking garage.  At first glance it will appear as an office building.

4. Devise a way so that the cars are not visible from the outside during daytime or nighttime.

5. Make the exterior respond to the constantly changing light and color of the Oklahoma sky.

6. The structure will “connect” to campus and not duplicate.

7. Think “Brick Shadow” and soft / sky reflections.

8. Make the architectural mass “dissolve” into the sky

New developed Architectural Mesh

To achieve a homogenous surface with only 25% open area, HAVER & BOECKER designed a new mesh specification using slightly crimped flat wires: LARGO-PLENUS 2022 made from Stainless Steel T316.

Small gaps between panels provide minimal interference for the integrity of the mesh facade.

In full sunlight the mesh facade appears fully opaque and the building is not recognizable as a parking garage. To further accentuate the structure, aluminum tubes have been added to the south and east elevation, which create interesting reflections on the mesh itself.

HAVER & BOECKER provided three 150 mm square cut-outs per panel, that allow the aluminum tubes to penetrate through the mesh, while at the same time maintaining the tension on the panels.

The area of the parking garage exceeds the standard lot size of the Chesapeake Campus; therefore black wire mesh panels indicate the regular lot size and separate the north and south elevation.

Aside from the aluminum tubes the east facade is equipped with another architectural feature. In the center 8 black mesh panels are set back facing inside the parking garage.

Camouflage and transparency

Although the mesh facade disguises the building on the outside, from the inside it still provides a high degree of transparency when looking out. With an open area of only 25%, the mesh is still open enough to be able to recognize buildings, natural elements and people outside of the garage. At the same time it provides adequate airflow to allow for natural ventilation.

Even though the Oklahoma weather can be hot and humid in the summer, LARGO-PLENUS 2022 cools down the air significantly and provides comfortable shading inside the garage.

Together with the architect and contractors a special invisible tensioning system, customized for this building, was developed to further enhance the aesthetics. 

Dimensions of the project

The Chesapeake parking garage holds 791 cars on 4 floors. HAVER & BOECKER supplied a total of 117 panels for a total facade area of 3,200 m².

The standard panel size on all four elevations is 10 x 3 meters, with the largest single element being 13.40 x 3.65m. This panel is installed separately on the west facade to outline the connection of two office buildings on the opposite side of the street.

A total of 10 special elements are painted black to underline certain areas of the garage; 5 elements are bent vertically by 90 degrees to highlight the uniformity of the mesh facade. 

Teamwork

"Car Park Two at Chesapeake" was designed by Elliott + Associates Architects, Oklahoma City with the support of Walker Parking Consultants. From the first  exchange of ideas with the architect in September 2005 to the completion of the garage in the summer of 2008, HAVER & BOECKER and our US subsidiary W.S. Tyler provided a variety of mock-ups, took on-site measurements and supported the local contractor during installation.

For the past several years, University of Florida Health (UF Health) located in Gainesville, Fla., has been working toward consolidating pediatric services within the university medical center. A planned renovation for the east entry atrium and building façade led the owners to realize it was time to establish a completely separate identity for the children’s hospital. According to Bradley S. Pollitt, AIA and vice president of facilities development at UF Health Shands Hospital, “The portal project is now rebranding the entrance to the building so that our smallest patients do not have to enter through the adult hospital.”

Understanding that a hospital can feel ominous to a child, the owners asked the architectural firm, Ponikvar and Associates, to take an approach to the renovation that was child-friendly, while at the same time created a separate identity for the children’s hospital that would differentiate it from other areas of the facility. According to Jack Ponikvar, “We were challenged to do something that was child-like without being childish.”

This differentiation demanded a dramatic change to the exterior of the building. Months of reviewing design options and product research led the architecture firm and the construction management firm, Ajax Building Corporation, to consider a light and colorful alternative to the somberness of the existing brick façade with HAVER Architectural Mesh.

The woven wire mesh product by HAVER & BOECKER provided options not available with any other type of material. The color selection allowed for a bright, multi-color façade layered over the existing brick cladding, which would be appealing to young patients while also establishing a new identity for the building. Additionally, creating colored facades with architectural mesh presents a multitude of unique design options. The interaction of artificial light, daylight, transparency, luminosity and color ensures the stylistic effects of the façade change continually. And, the painted stainless steel wire mesh is incredibly durable, weather-resistant and virtually maintenance free.

Bringing the visually striking design to life was not without its challenges. The outermost skin of the façade is made up of 26 green painted MULTI-BARRETTE 8124 panels. These include 19, 85-foot long panels that diagonally slope approximately 19 feet over the span of the design. Supporting the mesh panels at the changing elevations to maintain the rolling hills visual provided a unique test for the installation team. However, overcoming the obstacles has proven worthwhile in the appearance of the finished product.

The wire mesh LARGO-PLENUS 2022 with a 25 percent open area was used for the Shands Children’s Hospital project.

Says Pollitt, “Changing the building this way creates a more modern perspective of the hospital. The new façade will really grab people as they go by and make them want to come in. The colors make it attractive to children. It’s more cheerful, which can be part of a good memory.”

Based on the viewing position the facade now appears either golden or in a stainless steel color.

Haver & Boecker supplied ready-to-install elements with flat tension profile, clevis bolts and one-sided pressure springs.

AIC architects equipped this office  building in Gießen with a cladding made of stainless steel mesh LARGO-PLENUS 2022. The assembly team of Haver & Boecker installed a total of 650 m² architectural wire mesh on site.

The Mandate
The college wanted to modernize their 30,290 square foot auditorium under a community bond program. They chose the IBI Group, Architecture Planning, to completely redesign the facility into a Performing Arts Center that would include a new entry, reception, classrooms, and the remodeling of the 450 theatre seats.

The Challenge
The outdoor amphitheater features a covered stage which requires surrounding shade structures for flawless visual screening. The IBI Group needed to find a shading material that was durable, while still allowing for maximum airflow and sun protection during performances in the amphitheater.

The Solution
After multiple design concepts, and with the help of Haver & Boecker Architectural Experts, it was clear that wire mesh <link _top architectural mesh largo-plenus>LARGO-PLENUS 2027 was the best solution for the amphitheater. These HAVER Architectural Mesh panels would achieve the desired visual screening, offer efficient air circulation, and provide effective <link _top protection with architectural>solar protection during performances. Not only are the structures visually appealing, they are also made from stainless steel, which lasts for decades with just a simple cleaning process.

The architectural team engineered a custom solution including non-standard stainless steel hardware, which allowed them to roll the panels through 3 – 4 redirections.  A fully engineered mounting system was used with flat tension profile, clevis assembly and pressure springs for attaining proper installation tension.

The Result
The project was a complete success. It received the California, CCFC 2015 Award of Honor (Community College Facility Coalition). The College personnel, The IBI Group Architects and the Haver & Boecker Architectural Team are incredibly proud of the collaboration.

Early 2015 the internationally renowned conductor and violinist Joji Hattori opened in Vienna’s 1st district, in direct neighborhood to the Albertina, Opera and Hotel Sacher a remarkable restaurant with excellent Japanese cuisine.

The Restaurant “Shiki” – Japanese for “Four Seasons” but also for “Conducting” – stand according to the vita of Joji Hattori for a successful combination of Japanese culture and European style. On total 280 m² you can enjoy in the sectors Bar, Brasserie and Fine-Dining menus from regional ingredients prepared in an innovative Japanese Style.

Dining in contemporary ambiance
For the architecture and design concept the architects of BEHF Corporate Architects were brought in. The aim of the design was to create a Japanese-inspired and at the same time European interior design. The elegant and modern ambience with perfectly concerted materials reflect the high demand of the restaurant even in the interior design.

Also Architectural Mesh by HAVER & BOECKER plays a significant role in the design concept of the architects. Different wall areas were put in the limelight with HAVER Architectural Mesh. Two different mesh types were used for the claddings: LARGO-PLENUS 2027 as decorative wall covering in the Brasserie as well as EGLA-MONO 4371 as an optical highlight in front of some plant areas in the Fine-Dining.

However, the Architectural Mesh was not used in stainless steel look, the mesh received a colored painting. The mesh elements LARGO-PLENUS 2027 got a metallic bronze lacquering, while the EGLA-MONO 4371 elements received a special painting in the color of the exterior façade.

Woven wire mesh can generally be combined with a variety of colors. In addition to RAL colors, there are also numerous metallic colors available. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited as multi-colored designs can also be applied.

In total 140 m² of HAVER Architectural Mesh have been integrated into the design concept of the restaurant Shiki.

In course of the energy-efficient school renovation the “Gymnasium Kenzingen” received a new skin of wire mesh type Largo-Plenus 2027.

The mesh has been brought onto frames, which have been mounted in cassette form to cover the insulated facade with high value.

The square opening was specially developed for this project. To achieve the desired 25% open area, this mesh type is woven with flat wires, which at the same time achieve a uniform and even light reflection.

Laboratoires VIVACY is a French company specializing in the development, manufacture, and distribution of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers for aesthetic and anti-aging treatments. With this new building, the company remains committed to pursuing its philosophy of the highest quality and innovation - both in product development and architecture. 

The building, designed by the renowned architectural firm Patriarche, seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics. The metal mesh façade serves multiple purposes: it acts as sun protection and gives the structure a unique visual identity with its elegantly shimmering, semi-transparent surface. 
 

Innovative Stainless Steel Wire Mesh Façade Cladding
A special feature of the building is its triangular floor plan with rounded corners, which required a customized façade solution. A total of 2,875 square meters of HAVER Architectural Mesh LARGO-PLENUS 2127 — a flat wire mesh known for its elegance, stability, and high functionality — was used for this purpose.

In addition to playing with light and shadow, the stainless steel mesh creates a visually light, semi-transparent shell that creates dynamic light reflections depending on the position of the sun. It gives the façade a timeless aesthetic while also serving practical requirements: It is corrosion-resistant, maintenance-free, and fully recyclable.
 As a result, it provides a sustainable solution for modern building projects that balance design-oriented and ecological requirements.
 

Efficient Solar Shading and Sustainability 
One of the key benefits of the wire mesh façade is its effective solar shading. With an open mesh structure of 28%, it reduces direct sunlight while allowing natural lighting to filter through and preserve unobstructed views. This improves indoor comfort and helps reduce energy costs for air conditioning.
 

Tailor-made Façade Elements for the Highest Demands
The façade cladding of the building was constructed using a total of 160 custom-made wire mesh elements, which were specially manufactured by Haver & Boecker for this project. Each element stands 8.5 meters tall, with widths ranging from 1.1 and 2.4 meters. The installation was completed using Haver and Boecker’s proven mounting solution. 

The surrounding mesh façade showcases a harmonious and consistent design. The triangular floor plan of the building, with its rounded corners, placed high demands on the planning and production of the mesh façade. 

The integration of the company logos highlights the custom-designed nature of this project, demonstrating the precision and attention to detail required.
