61. 17 attempts to get going – patience is a real virtue

“When someone goes on a journey, he can tell a story”, said the German poet and journalist Matthias Claudius in the 18th century.

This saying still rings true today – as it implies special experiences that you have while travelling. Business trips aren’t excluded from this.

An extraordinary experience occurred during a trip to Russia in 1992 for Managing Partner Dr Reinhold Festge (fourth generation) and Sales Representative Heinz-Werner Bunse. A flight by the Russian airline Aeroflott from Moscow to Kharkov couldn’t take off on time because the right engine of the Tupolev 134 didn’t start. After more than two hours and twelve unsuccessful attempts, the spark was still missing in the truest sense of the word.

So patience was needed. The Haver & Boecker employees didn’t find this quite so easy. It was unbearably cramped in the plane; the air was stale. Half the plane was occupied by Asians with huge parcels and duffle bags in their hand luggage. The Asians and the Russian passengers were surprisingly calm. No nerves from the stewardesses, no impatience, not even when the stairs were pulled up to the aircraft again – and what’s more, the travellers weren’t allowed to disembark. Finally, after three and a half hours, the right engine started on the 17th attempt and the Tupolev taxied to the start – accompanied by cheerful music. A good omen – the aircraft and all passengers arrived safely in Kharkov. In Germany, the aircraft would certainly have been changed long ago. Other countries, other customs.
