Lilla Lidingöbron Bridge

The town of Lidingö has transformed its Lilla Lidingöbron Bridge into an architectural masterpiece. The old pedestrian bridge, built in 1925, has been replaced to make way for a modern, trend-setting structure. The project was successfully completed in the year 2023.

Lidingö Island in greater Stockholm

Nestled in the metropolitan area of Stockholm, the picturesque island of Lidingö is not only an idyllic place to live, but is also a link between the island and the capital city. Two bridges serve this purpose: a motorway bridge and the Lilla Lidingöbron pedestrian bridge, which not only offers space for pedestrians and cyclists but also for tram traffic.

The old pedestrian bridge was built in 1925. As the maintenance work on the bridge was deemed no longer feasible nearly 100 years later, the town of Lidingö embarked on a project to build a new bridge. After ten years of planning and construction, the Lilla Lidingöbron Bridge was successfully completed in 2023.

Together with the British architectural firm Knight Architects, the plans were drawn up for one of Sweden's longest bridges - an impressive 730-metre long and 16-metre wide pre-stressed concrete bridge with 16 bridge pillars. The new bridge is designed to triple the capacity for pedestrian and bicycle traffic and boasts a fantastic view. The bridge is divided into a crossover for pedestrians, cyclists and scooters and two tracks for tram traffic connecting Lidingö with Stockholm.

Engineering masterpiece and innovative solution involving HAVER architectural mesh

The size of the new bridge alone makes it a landmark engineering feat. The complementing DOGLA-TRIO 1032 architectural mesh from Haver & Boecker offered an ideal solution: robust and durable, with an open area of around 75%, a weight of 4.4 kg/cubic metre and a maximum width of three metres per mesh element, it not only met the engineering requirements, but also contributed to the architectural design of the bridge. The frame construction specially designed by Haver & Boecker also provides reliable fall protection. DOGLA-TRIO 1032 architectural mesh is characterised by its vertical wire group structure, which produces a unique aesthetic appearance and transparency. Architectural mesh is maintenance-free, corrosion-resistant and fully recyclable at the end of its life cycle. A total of 500 square metres of architectural mesh comprising completely ready-to-install mesh elements including the mounting equipment were delivered.

The Lilla Lidingöbron Bridge is the result of successful collaboration between urban planners, architects and innovative suppliers such as Haver & Boecker. After successful completion in 2023, it not only provides a modern link between Lidingö and Stockholm, but also represents a trend-setting project for Haver & Boecker that demonstrates how innovation, aesthetics and functionality can work together to contribute towards a sustainable and safe infrastructure.
