54. More than 20,000 products analysed in 70 years

The HAVER & BOECKER Institute, whose name has changed several times in the course of its history – Versuchsraum, Versuchsanstalt, Research & Development Centre – plays a key role within the machine factory.

As early as the beginning of the 1950s, it was recognised just how vital it was to analyse products in interaction with the packaging material (i.e. the bagged goods) at a central point. The assessment of the products with regard to their behaviour during flow, filling and storage is then, as now, the basis for the design of suitable high-performance filling technology and the upstream and downstream process engineering components. The HAVER & BOECKER Institute has standardised test methods for this purpose. Basically, the so-called packaging triangle consisting of product, packaging material and packaging machine is considered. The results of the analyses and tests provide certainty when designing and guaranteeing the performance of a packaging system.

Customers are also constantly developing their products further. New compositions and a growing variety of products are a continuous feature. Many products are becoming finer and finer. The finer a product becomes, the higher the demands on the filling technology. Data from over 20,000 product analyses has been collected since the central testing department was established. Besides common products such as cement, lime and gypsum, there are also a number of “exotic” products – such as grated liquorice or bat droppings coming from Australia as fertiliser.
