53. Fresh fish

Together with colleagues from Haver & Boecker Latinoamericana (HBL), Florian Festge, then Vice President of W.S. Tyler, visited various mines in northern Brazil in 2010.

One stop took them to Marabá. Although this town is one of the largest in northern Brazil, it still wasn’t very progressive and modern at the time. The gentlemen were accommodated in a simple hotel. After a long day at work, they were hungry and wanted a good dinner. Oswaldo Delfin, one of the HBL employees, said: “I know a great restaurant with first-class fish. It’s on a ship.”

The gentlemen set off and made their way across a small jetty onto a 3-deck ship. The restaurant was located on the top deck. They ordered a very special fish from the friendly waitress. But it was a long time coming. Fifteen minutes went by, the men’s stomachs rumbled – yet the fish they ordered never arrived. Finally, after 90 minutes, it was served. The men devoured it in no time at all and then waited for their main course. Once again, they had to wait a long time. “The fish have yet to be caught,” they joked.  In the end, they were rewarded with a wonderful meal and a great flavour. Full and satisfied, they set off to return to the hotel.

As Florian Festge turned round to take another photo of the boat, he saw the chef – recognisable by his chef’s hat – holding a fishing rod in the water and pulling out a small fish. His eyes were opened: The fish really did have to be caught after the order was placed. A dish couldn’t be fresher!
