To this end, Bernhard Beumer liked to travel by plane on Sundays, landing in Viracapos near Campinas, the international airport of Sao Paulo. After a sixteen-hour journey, he arrived on site at around 7 o’clock in the morning. After Dr Reinhold Festge took over the management of Haver + Beumer Latinoamericana in October 1980, Bernhard Beumer continued these regular visits.
One Sunday, Dr Reinhold Festge was sitting comfortably at breakfast with his wife Susanne when he realised that Bernhard Beumer had announced he was coming. The plane had long since landed when Dr Festge jumped into the car to race to the airport. When he had parked his car and walked to the tarmac – airports were still very simple back then – he saw Bernhard Beumer sitting on his suitcase from afar. He welcomed the guest from Beckum with 1000 apologies. The latter took the delay in his stride: “Oh, I had a really exciting book with me and now I’ve almost finished it.”
