48. Eating “raisins” at lunch in Bulgaria

n the 1960s , Haver & Boecker supplied more than ten inline air packers for heavy and light soda ash with many wagon loading machines to the world’s largest state-owned soda ash plant near Varna in Bulgaria.

The acceptance procedure required long stays on site – often associated with a lot of stress.

The Haver & Boecker employees were catered for in the huge factory canteen. When Sales Director Wolfgang Haschke and the talented designer Paul Schwake were once sitting together at lunch, Schwake asked his counterpart what he was constantly pushing onto the edge of his plate. “Flies,” was Wolfgang Haschke’s blunt answer. Paul Schwake responded with his Rhenish humor: “Oh, I thought they were raisins and ate them too.”
