10. A country full of tennis courts

Ralf Schäfermeier – at the time still assistant to Rudolf Haver, third-generation Managing Director – flew to the new subsidiary in Brazil for the first time.

On the approach to the international airport of Campinas, Viracopos, Ralf Schäfermeier looked through the window and saw a large number of red areas dotted around.

As a tennis enthusiast, he was delighted: “It’s great how many tennis courts they have here!” At the time, he didn’t know that the earth near Campinas was bright red due to iron oxide.
