97. “Shops in Sweden are like tomato ketchup”

After the Second World War, Dieter Hinze was the representative for products of the Machinery Division in Stockholm.

Wolfgang Haschke remembers interesting business deals and, in this context, long train journeys in winter. Some of these took him all the way north to Kiruna – around 1,200 kilometers from Stockholm. The impressive castle-like Gripsholm Palace in Mariefred was also situated along the route. The castle, built in the Renaissance style, was commissioned by Gustav I Vasa. “Travel educates” was the conviction of Sales Director Wolfgang Haschke.

Hinze’s successor Kronsberg spoke about the business situation in his home country at a meeting of representatives: “Shops in Sweden are like tomato ketchup: You have to wait a long time for something to come, and then it all comes at once.” Friedhelm Heese, Head of Finance at the time, responded promptly: “The main thing is that something comes. We can post any number.”
