93. Calibration saved

In the mid-1980s, an important event took place at the Bernhofer cement plant in Golling, a small town in Salzburger Land, Austria.

This concerned the initial calibration of the new Boekels weighers with weight correction function. This initial calibration was very important for Haver & Boecker, because if the calibration authority approved the Boekel weigher, the individual weighers of the filling spouts on the ROTO-PACKER® would not require additional calibration.

Both the customer’s employees and the Haver & Boecker staff were eagerly awaiting the inspection by the top boss of the calibration authority from Vienna. The aim was to ensure that the pointer of the weigher always remained in the zero position. While the agile head of the Weights and Measures Department – who walked around the weigher with springy steps – was still gaining his first impression, the HAVER employees realised that the floor under the weigher was so flexible under his steps that the pointer was rocking back and forth. The inspector was unaware of this. Before the inspection got serious, it was time for lunch. During this time, a HAVER and a Bernhofer employee travelled to the nearby DIY store to buy some squared timber. They used this to stabilise the ceiling from the platform below. The desired effect was achieved. The floor no longer gave way. When the weigher was checked, everything went smoothly. We received the hoped-for approval and the customer replaced the squared timbers with proper metal supports. Lucky again!
